Chapter 15

“Don’t touch him!” Law’s voice boomed through the building. The last time he’d seen a god go down like that was when Rune had been cut on a mistletoe-infused spiked wolf collar. Law dashed across the room and crashed down on the ground next to Boden. The god was cut up on the broken crockery, and there was blood everywhere.

“I’ll call an ambulance,” Candy said.

“No!” Law shouted. “No,” he repeated in a more even tone. “Candy, do you have a back room I can take him to?”

Candy stared at him for a moment and then took to steps toward the back. “This way.”

Law studied how he was going to do this before settling on hosting Boden’s warrior mass over his shoulder. He knew Kenna was next to him without having to look. He liked being able to feel her calming presence.

He followed Candy to what appeared to be an employee break room and gingerly draped Boden over the ratted-out cloth couch. He crouched next to Boden and started checking him for any injury not consistent with falling onto broken plates. Boden still breathed, and he wasn’t hot, yet. Law sat back on his heels when he could only find abrasions on Boden’s arms and face. Nothing to indicate any kind of poisoning. He leaned forward to sniff Boden’s breath. Nothing there to indicate anything either.

“Where did he come from?” Candy asked in a shaking voice. “Is he okay? Do I need to call an ambulance?”

“He’s…” He turned, and his gaze met Kenna’s. He had no idea how to tell anyone exactly what was happening here.

Kenna stepped up to Candy and wrapped an arm around her. “Boden is what you would refer to as a Celtic god. We don’t know what happened to him, but human doctors would be unable to help him.”

“A god?” Candy’s mouth snapped shut, and she sat down on the floor right where she was. “This isn’t happening.” Her eyes went huge. “Lawson and you and Lawson?”

“He’s an, um…” Kenna winced and then sat down next to Candy and held the other woman’s hand. “We are part of the unseen. Lawson is an immortal Druid, and I am a faery.”

“Oh,” Candy said in a shaking voice. “Yes, that does, no, it doesn’t. You’re all crazy, or I am.”

Kenna patted the other woman’s hand. “I know this is difficult, but it’s true. Bran saved Ned and Ted tonight from an evil spirit. We are not dangerous, but Boden is in danger, and we can’t help him if you’re going to freak out.”

“How do I explain him to my customers?” Candy wailed. “He just appeared out of thin air!”

Boden moaned. “Don’t cry,” he mumbled. “I fix.”

“Shh,” Law said and used one hand to hold him down. “What happened to you?”

“Morrigan.” He tried to sit up again and then cursed when Law kept holding him down. “Altair is coming. You have to get out of here.” His voice was stronger. “Wait. Where in the nine realms am I?”

“Four Leaf Diner,” Candy whispered.
